Dogs of Portugal and Cantinho da Milu
Dogs of Portugal Animal Charity is a group of young, multicultural, highly motivated, men and women
that devote – on a voluntary, non-remunerated basis – their short free time to improve the living standards of abandoned and mistreated dogs in Portugal.
We have different nationalities, different professional backgrounds (from the services to the health industry, or from legal practice to the armed and security forces) but are strongly united under the premise of upgrading the animal welfare practices in Portugal to the highest standards achieved in the most advanced countries in the world.
We provide support to a shelter Cantinho da Milu in Setubal. The shelter is situated on a farm where dogs are installed in big “corrals”. Each “corral” has a big wooden house in which the dogs have plastic beds and automatic water system. Milu is there from the morning to the evening and with only a handful of employees she manages to clean the place, feed the dogs and distribute medication to those that need it. Their efficiency and effort is amazing taking into consideration that there are over 400 dogs and the farm is very large.
All dogs are vaccinated and dewormed, all females are sterilised and some males are castrated. Dogs have regular vet attention.
The role of Dogs of Portugal organisation is mostly to re-home the dogs. So if you would like to give a home to one – the choice is amazing.; all sizes and colours and all ages, from puppies to seniors. We bring them to your home,
you don’t actually have to drive to Setubal.
We also have some cats in temporary homes at our Animal Sanctuary.
How to help?
1. We need volunteers to help in the shelter. You can simple come, even once and for only one day; all help is welcome.
2. Donations: anything is needed. Especially:
- dry food and canned food,
- blankets for winter,
- collars, harnesses and leashes,
- Scalibor collars,
- spot-on against fleas and ticks (like Advantix or Frontline),
- medications (Actidox, Amoxicilina and others),
- pharmacy (plasters, bandages, syringes, gauze, sterile gloves…)
5. Monetary donations: Milu receives very little in financial donations and she spends lots of her own money on the dogs: vet bills, medications, food. Any financial donation is helpful; even as small as 2 euro. Bank account number of Cantinho da Milu is: 0033.0000.4541.0378.02005 (BancoMillenium BCP)
6. Fostering dogs: many dogs stay with Milu for very long time and fostering a dog
can help with the usual expenses – food, vaccinations, medications, spot-on, bath. You can choose your dog and foster it either by paying a chosen amount to Cantinho’s account or simply send a Scalibor collar, a spot-on, a snack, a toy or required medications. We make sure that “your” dog gets it and you get a “thank-you certificate” from us with a picture of your dog.
7. Flight assistance: some of our dogs get new homes abroad: in Germany (Frankfurt), Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. If you fly to one of these destinations you can be our “flight partner”. We bring you the dog to the airport, with all the required documentation and transporting box, pay for the dog’s ticket, help you with the check-in and our foreign partner meets you at the destination airport to receive the dog.
This is a very important help for us.
